SUPPORT IN THE THIRD YEAR

If you find yourself questioning your major and career path, do not worry – you are not alone! Many students find themselves feeling this way as they dive deeper into their studies and start thinking about the future. Remember, it is okay to reassess and explore new interests. Here are some resources to help:

As a third year, you are likely beginning your upper division coursework for your major. We encourage you to utilize the Office of Student Success and Achievement’s resources to stay on top of your studies.

Experiencing changes in friendships is a common part of the college journey. It’s okay to feel disconnected and to seek new connections.

Here are some ways to find support and build new friendships:

  • Join a new student organization that interests you. The Involvement Network if your go-to hub for exploring student organizations. You are also always welcome at the Engagement Fairs hosted at the beginning of fall and spring semesters.
  • Attend events on campus and in the Athens community. Quick links to calendars can be found HERE in the Transition Guide.
  • Check out the free digital well-being resources such as Nod and Togetherall for strategies and opportunities for connecting with peers.

Employers and graduate & professional school admissions committees are looking for potential employees and students who have had a well-rounded experience in college. Take time this year to build up your resume a little more so that you have examples to share in job and graduate & professional school interviews and/or personal statements. Here are a few ways to get started:

  • Search and apply for internships on Handshake. The Career Center provides many resources to help you navigate your search.
  • Pursue a leadership role in a student organization you are involved in.
  • Give back to causes you care about in to hone meaningful skills. Volunteering can be a single day, a few hours each week, or even a whole summer! The Office of Service Learning and Engagement, Leadership, and Service can help you find opportunities that align with your passions!
  • Leaving the country for a few weeks, a semester, or a year can enhance your cultural awareness, spark a passion or vision, and give you a bigger perspective on your career values and goals. Learn more at studyaway.uga.edu.
  • You can learn new things about an interesting field while building valuable relationships with faculty. The Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) can support your research efforts. Learn more at curo.uga.edu.
  • Search gradschools.com to find graduate programs that align with your interests.
    • Take note of any entrance exams required for programs you are interested in and begin studying for them and taking practice tests.
  • Many students choose to go to graduate school, law school, or some sort of health school (medical school, dental school, physician assistant school, veterinarian school etc.). The Pre-Professional Advising Office is ready to help and advise you on this process!
    • Schedule an in-person or virtual appointment with an advisor via Sage. Full instructions on how to schedule an appointment can be found here.
    • Just have a quick question? Drop by during their walk-in hours.
    • Join the Pre-Health or Pre-Law Listserv – they regularly send out information and news about the resources and opportunities available to you.
  • The Career Center offers many resources and virtual and in-person workshops to help you prepare for graduate school.
  • Interested in earning your undergraduate and graduate degree in 5 years through the Double Dawgs program? Many program applications are due during the first semester of your third year so don’t miss your desired program’s deadline!
  • The Graduate School at UGA offers virtual and in-person events and pre-recorded workshops to help students make informed decisions about pursuing graduate education.

Many students may not be ready to pursue graduate school or start the career of their dreams right after college. That is perfectly ok! Here are a couple of unique alternatives to consider:
