SUPPORT IN THE SECOND YEAR

Many students move off-campus after their first year at UGA!

  • Wondering which parking lots give you the best chance of getting a permit? When submitting your registration, we recommend picking your top 5 lots from the commuter parking map to boost your chances. If you don’t get a permit right away, don’t worry—stay on the waitlist! Spots can open at any time.
  • Worried about parking? We get it! But there are ways to make it work. Check out visitor parking options, which are a pay-per-hour option if you’re in a crunch and need to park on main campus without a permit. You can also check enforcement hours to see when you can park for free (just make sure your vehicle is registered!) or apply for a permit in Park & Ride lots, the most budget-friendly option—just hop on a short bus ride to main campus.
  • Need help with money stuff? Schedule a one-on-one chat with a Peer Counselor at the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA)! They can help you with things like signing a lease, paying bills on time, and budgeting so your money lasts.
  • Looking for budget-friendly meal ideas? Take a $5 cooking class at the University Health Center’s Nutrition Kitchen or check out their newest recipes and recipe archives!

Even though many second-year students move off campus or dive into other activities, it is especially important to still be connected to campus. UGA offers many opportunities for you to actively participate both on campus and in the community.

  • Apply to join the Leadership UGA: Emerging Leaders cohort, which will provide you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills, interact with campus and community leaders, and become aware of the social issues facing our campus, community, state, nation, and world.
  • Service-Learning integrates meaningful community service with academic coursework. Check out the listing of courses available by searching the UGA bulletin or Athena – detailed instructions on how to do so can be found here. Participating in a Service-Learning course can also help you meet the Experiential Learning requirement for graduation.
  • There are also many places across campus to find volunteer and leadership opportunities
    • The Office of Service Learning offers special programs focused on community engagement and public service
    • EngageGA is the online platform that helps connect you with volunteer and service-learning opportunities
    • ServeUGA is a student organization that provides one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities in the Athens-Clarke county community.
    • Go on an IMPACT Service Break trip during your fall or spring break, a completely immersive experience to live and volunteer within a new community during a University break.
  • Participate in a Study Away experience through the Office of Global Engagement to broaden your horizons and have the experience of a lifetime.
  • Make research a part of your undergraduate career at UGA! The Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities can help you get started!
  • Pursue peer leadership opportunities to give back to your fellow students, serve in a leadership role, and gain transferrable skills for the real world. There are numerous opportunities available, from peer tutors to student ambassadors. A great place to start looking for these opportunities is in your School/College or departments within the Division of Student Affairs.

We want to see you succeed at the University of Georgia – inside and outside of the classroom. The University offers many resources to help you succeed academically. As a second-year student, you may be familiar with many of these already.

During the second year, many students are deciding on an official major or changing their major.

Some majors are highly competitive and require an additional application with specific entrance requirements. This often includes programs in the Terry College of Business, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the College of Engineering. Not sure if your major requires an application? Check with your academic advisor to find out!

Didn’t get into your intended major? You’re not alone, and it’s completely okay! Many students face this situation, and there are plenty of paths to success. The Exploratory Center can help you find alternative majors that align with your interests and goals, while the Career Center can guide you in gaining experience and skills to stay on track with your career plans. You have options, and we’re here to support you every step of the way!

Are you pursuing a career in healthcare or law? The UGA Career Center and the Pre-Professional Advising Office offer many resources to help you prep for those careers.

  • The Career Center offers “Career Development eLC Modules for Pre-Health Students” to guide you through every step of the application process for medical, dental, nursing, or allied health schools. Learn more and enroll for free today!
  • Explore the Pre-Professional Advising Office (PPAO) website for the full rundown of resources and support to support your pursuit of these career paths!
  • Download the UGA Pre-Professional Planner app in the App Store (Android version coming soon!). This app enables pre-health and pre-law students to keep track of their experience hours for their pre-professional applications.

It is never too early to gain career-related work experience. The UGA Career Center offers many resources to help you get started

  • Schedule a meeting with your Career Consultant. Every School and College—plus Unspecified/Exploring Students—has a dedicated Career Consultant who can help you find opportunities to gain career-related experience. Schedule a meeting to start exploring your options!
  • Attend Career and Internship Fairs to find part-time jobs and internship opportunities.
  • Consider participating in the Career Center’s Intern for a Day program
  • Connect with a UGA Mentor either through a Quick Chat or a 16-week mentorship to connect with an alum in your desired career.
  • Try Forage, a free online resource which offers virtual experience programs designed by leading companies. It’s a unique opportunity for you to try out a career at your own pace and in your own time, from the comfort of your home.
  • Engage in a micro-internship, a short-term, paid, project-based assignment that is similar to those given to new hires or interns to help you explore different career paths while building your portfolio, expanding your network, and developing your skills.
